Before my 20 week ultrasound, my husband and I decided that we wanted to know the sex of the baby. At first, I wanted to wait until my 8th month of pregnancy to hold a baby shower and reveal the gender of the baby at the same time. However, my husband thought waiting until the 8th month to tell everyone what we were having was excessive. So, I compromised and suggested that we wait three weeks so I could make preparations for a nice gender reveal party.
GENDER REVEAL IDEAS
There are some great ideas, games and decoration themes for a gender reveal party on Pinterest and I was just so excited to pick my favourites and hold this epic-party-to be. To reveal the gender, I was either going to make a nice cake with the colour of the gender revealed inside or my husband and I were going to open a big box of helium-filled balloons with the colour of the gender.
GIRL OR BOY
At the ultrasound, I was so anxious to know if our baby was going to be a girl or a boy. The doctor did not make a peep! She just carried on searching for things on the screen and printing out ultrasound pics that my husband nor I were able to interpret. Finally, my husband broke the silence and asked, “Is everything ok?” The doctor reassured us that everything was fine and started to make small comments on what she was looking at. Finally, he asked, “Can we find out the gender of the baby?” The doctor relied, “yeah, I’ll tell you later.” Silence again. I had enough of the tension and just started making conversation with my husband while the doctor did her thing. In the middle of my sentence, she interrupted and said, “it’s a …”
The timing and her tone completely threw me off guard. If you can imagine the tone that Marge Simpson’s twin sisters have when they talk, then you can more or less imagine what the doctor sounded like when she announced our big news.
I looked up at the screen to confirm what she said, and I asked, “are you sure?” She answered, “Of course I’m sure, you can’t see?” I honestly didn’t see what she saw and neither did my husband. We just took her word for it since she was the expert.
A CHANGE OF PLANS
It wasn’t until I got out of that room that I could start getting excited about our news. When we got to the car, I noticed my husband had a worried look on his face. He bluntly told me: “We can’t wait three weeks to tell everyone. We have to tell everyone now.” What?? But I had to plan the party!! I already compromised!
He argued that he would cave into the pressure of his relatives’ persistent nagging. I suggested ways he could avoid their attempts to get the secret out of him. In the end, there was nothing I could do. In my husband’s diplomatic way, he basically told me that I had one day to figure out how to reveal the gender the way I wanted to or else he would tell everyone himself. Unfair, but challenge accepted.
All my party plans were out the window. However, I was determined to surprise our friends and family anyway. As soon as I got home, I started to make cupcakes with the colour of the gender hidden inside. I made the first batch and drove around with my husband surprising our relatives first. Then, I baked more cupcakes and brought them to work, to the dance studio and to my friends to surprise them one by one. I even got their reactions on video: I first asked them what their guess was and then gave them the green light to eat the cupcake. Here’s the final result:
