It’s mid-November and as a Canadian, Christmas mode has been ON since November 1st. I’ve been singing yuletide carols to my six-month-old and started decorating last weekend! I know my American friends are probably waiting until Thanksgiving is over to start decorating trees and making gingerbread cookies but that doesn’t mean they can’t start planning.
MUST-HAVE CHRISTMAS LISTS
Every year, I always plan to get my shopping, decorations and baking done on time. However, I always find myself doing something at the last minute. Last year, I decided to stay on top of things by making Christmas lists. Not your standard, recycled white paper that ends up getting thrown into the garbage by mistake but a decent Christmas List: Something pretty that I can hang on my cork board in the kitchen.
For me, I have three main Christmas lists that I can easily print on a standard A4 size paper: Christmas To Do List, Christmas Card List and a Christmas Gift List. Simple and straightforward.
CHRISTMAS PLANNING ADVICE
If you feel like DIYing your Christmas cards this year, you best get started now especially if you need to order paper, chipboard, stickers etc. If you’ve got relatives overseas, like I do, those cards need to be mailed out by the first week of December at the latest. You can always opt to send e-cards but let’s face it, a handmade card delivered to your house is so much more thoughtful and gets you in the Christmas mood.
When it comes to baked goods, like Christmas sugar cookies, make a big batch of dough and freeze it in portions. Then, when you are expecting guests, thaw out a portion of frozen dough, mold and bake to have fresh cookies ready.
For those of you with small children, it will be tough running around to shopping malls and stores for Christmas gifts. I am going to try to buy the majority of gifts online and have everything ordered together in order to save on delivery costs. However, to get into the Christmas spirit, I do plan on shopping in our town centre that will be decorated with lights and a big Christmas tree.
